What it means for a patient
If you pay cash in Santa Ana, you can almost never find out online what you will be charged. The exception is the first visit at a handful of practices.
For any treatment, in our sample the price was not online: you had to call or go in. On top of that, about 1 in 4 official practice records no longer matched an active practice at that address.

Method
On September 25, 2026 we downloaded the 690 dentist records with a Santa Ana, California address from the CMS NPI registry and grouped them by address into 232 general dentistry locations.
We drew a random sample of 60 locations, which turned out to be 59 distinct practices. 45 were still active; 8 had closed or moved, 5 could not be found and 1 was a residential address.
Of the 45 active practices, 26 have a website we could find. We reviewed 21 of those sites in full and recorded whether they published an exact price, a "from" price, a free first visit, or nothing.
We reviewed by downloading pages and searching the web, without a full browser and without calling.

Limits
- 24 active practices could not be checked: no website, the site blocked the review, or the search budget ran out. Some of them may publish prices.
- A price that only appears on social media, on a coupon or at the front desk is not counted here.
- We could not tell the language of 22 of the active practices.
- For all these reasons the numbers are a floor, not a total.
